So it's now the
final that everybody was expecting, Nadal against Djokovic. Last
night Djokovic had to battle his way after a slow start to his forth
consecutive US Open final against a very in form Stanislas Wawrinka.
Wawrinka who previously enjoyed a straight sets win over Andy Murrayfired 57 winners during the 4 hours and 9 minutes match compared to
Djokovics 38. On the other hand the Swiss did produce 23 more errors
than Djokovic (69-46). With two sets a piece going in to the deciding
set there was a impressive 21 minute game with Wawrinka saving 5
break points. This triumph was still unfortunately not enough for the
Swiss as Djokovic edged his was finally to a 26 76 36 63 64 victory.
After his victory the top seed acknowledge Wawrinka's good
performance:-
"Wawrinka
was a better player for most of the match because he was aggressive
and played better tennis," said Djokovic.
"I
just tried to hang on and fight and be mentally tough and believe all
the way through I could actually win.
"And
I sincerely believed that as the match progressed maybe I would have
that physical edge over him.
"Also,
being in these kind of matches and situations and playing on a big
stage in semi-finals, maybe that experience could give me a little
bit more confidence mentally."
It safe to that
Djokovics match was the most entertaining match on Saturday as Rafael
Nadal had a far more easier route to the final against France's
Richard Gasquet. Nadal who has only dropped one set on his way to the
final needed two hours and 21 minutes to dismiss the Frenchman in
three sets - 64 76 62. Nadal recorded a impressive 71% first serves
in (winning 76% of them) as well as a 100% break point rate (4/4).
After his win Nadal said:-
"Last
year I didn't have the chance to play on this court,"
"To have the chance to play in the final on Monday is just a dream for me. It has been two amazing weeks.
"To have the chance to play in the final on Monday is just a dream for me. It has been two amazing weeks.
"Novak
is a great champion and will be a tough final for me, but I hope to
be ready for that."
