There was a big upset at the Apia Sydney
International today when Bulgarian Tsvetana
Pironkova continued her brilliant run at the
tournament by beating second seed Petra
Kvitova 64 64. Fresh from her 300th tour win
and with good form, going in to the match,
most expected a easy win for the Czech
however the world 107 had other ideas by
breaking the second seed twice in the first and
four times in the second set. Pironkova is now
the first qualifier to make the final at the event.
After her win she said:-
“I feel incredibly happy right now. In the same
time, I’m trying to stay grounded and focused for the
next match, which is obviously the most important match of the week,”

Blocking the Bulgarian from her first ever wta tour title in Germany's Angelique Kerber following  her straight sets win over young American Madison Keys. This will be the third meet for them both with the head to head so far being 1-1 (Kerber won in Nassau 2011, Pironkova in Doha 2012).

Sam Stosur hits a vicious forehand against Bojana Jovanovski.
Meanwhile at the Hobart International Sam
Stosur is still on course to win her first tour
event in her home country following a more
convincing 63 62 win over Bojana Jovanovski.
The past two matches has been close
encounters for the world 17 but numerous
media repoers say that Stosur's form is
definitely increasing. After the match quoting
 Heraldsun.com.au Stosur said:-
``I think I played pretty well today and obviously happy to get through a bit more routinely as well,'' said Stosur, who endured back-to-back two and a half hour marathons in the opening rounds.

``I just kept trying to do what I wanted to be doing, those first few games I felt I was setting up the point alright and would come into the court and then miss what looks to be the easy one.

``I just tried to not worry about those and keep giving myself those opportunities.

``As the match went on I was able to put those balls away a bit better and take advantage of all the chances I gave myself.
Awaiting Stosur in the next round is Klara Zakopalova after her 64 75 win over Alison Riske. In
the other semi final it is a Spanish affair between Garbine Muguruza and Estrella Cabeza
Candela. Muguruza enjoyed a straight forward 64 63 win over Kirsten Flipkens but Cabeza
Candela had a much harder time. In the match lasting a tiring two hours and 40 minuetes match
she managed to eventually edge out the resistant Monica Niculescu 36 76 64.
