WTA round-up

Venus Williams
ASB CLASSIC
Venus Williams began her season with a solid 63 76 (7-1) victory over world 134 Andrea Hlavackova. Despite the scoreline new Zealand media who witnessed her match did state that it was visible that Williams was not at her best level but hopefully her form will increase more as she progresses. Up next for the American is Austrian Yuveonne Meusburger who shocked 7th seed Mona Barthel with a 64 63 win. Meusburger had a good 2013 season by winning her first WTA title and seems to be carrying the form in to 2014. The only other seed playing today was 5th seed Jamie Hampton who had to came from behind to beat another Austrian Tamira Paszek 16 60 63. Other results are below:-

Brisbane International
At the Brisbane International which consist of five of the world top ten players, Maria Sharapova played her first tour match since August after being sidelined by a shoulder injury. On her comeback against Caroline Garcia the third seed produced a convincing and comprehensive 63 60 win. Up next for Sharapova is qualifier and 2011 Wimbledon junior champion Ashligh Barty. 17 year old Barty who had a extremely good doubles season in 2013 (reaching 3 grand slam finals) produced a impressive 63 75 win over Daniela Hantchova. On the other hand there was disappointment for another qualifier, Britain’s Heather Watson who lost 64 63 to 9th seed Cibulkova. Watson who's 2013 season fell below many peoples expectations can still take positives from Brisbane with her three wins during qualification including the 2nd seed Chanelle Scheepers. Other victories includes Suarez Navarro (who looks remarkably like Samir Nasri), Jankovic and home favourite Dellacqua. A full list of results are below:-

Shenzhen Open
At the 2014 Shenzhen Open which many people can be forgiven for forgetting about, things are going along quite swiftly. As yet there are no seed to lose in the tournewment with wins for Zakapalova (63 75 against youngester Vikic), Zheng jie (60 63 win over former world top 20 Peer) and second seed Sara Errani who battled to a 60 36 76 against Zheng Saisai. The most anticipated match yet to be played is top seed Li Na against wildcard and former world number 2 Vera Zonareva. Zonareva missed the entire 2013 season due to a serious shoulder injury and it will be extremely interesting to see how well she plays against Li Na who is without a doubt a superstar in Shenzhen.
