Epic semi finals and today will see a new women's champions

Today is just going to be a brief post. Yesterdays semi finals did not disappoint tennis fans world wide. Novak Djokovics epic five setter against Argentinian super-house Juan Martin Del Potro was the longest semi final of all times (4 hours and 44 miniuites). There was magnificent tennis displayed by both players with Djokovic finally winning 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 . In the other semi home favourite Andy Murray had to come from a set down against rising tennis star Janowicz. With Murray dropping the first set, the general public was preparing for another long match like Murrays quart final however Murray maintain focus and gradually worn the Polish star down to win 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3. So the final is what most people including me was hoping for, Murray v Djokovic. Heres a good summary from BBC of their previous meets:-

Murray v Djokovic head-to-head
  • Djokovic has won 11 of 18 matches.
  • Murray won only meeting on grass, beating the Serb in last year's Olympic semi-final.
  • Djokovic has won three of four Grand Slam encounters against the Briton.
  • All three of Djokovic's Grand Slam wins over Murray were at the Australian Open (2011, 2012, 2013)

Today is however the Women’s final with new favourite Sabine Lisicki playing against Frenchwomen Marion Bartoli. The main factor of this match in my opinion is nerves. Will Lisicki be able to maintain her calm taking into account the sudden increase and expectation of her winning but both the public and tennis commentators. Bartoli does have the experience of being a former finalist at Wimbledon so that experience could be very helpful to her game both mentally and physically. My prediction is for Lisicki to win this one. Below is a list of these two players previous meets (source ITF.com) :-
