Half a year ago the nation was in celebration when Andy Murray became the first british man in 77 years to win at SW19. There was a media frenzy with loads of people expecting a surge in the sports popularity and participation. So with Sport England releasing their participation figures this year has put a massive downer on the so called Murray effect. 406,000 played tennis reguarly in the year to October which is sadly a 39,000 decline year on year. Back in July i have previously talked about the problems with tennis in this country. The only positive that the British LTA can take from it is that there has been decreases in other sports too but considering how much publicity has been generated for the spoort by Murray this year in the UK is it a disheartening figure to say the least!.
